The fear of the unknown creates awe, fear & anxiety, may be due to this factor, our forefathers worshipped elements like fire, water, wind, rain and what not. Perhaps the unknown factor in it creates those sentiments in us. And it is fully justified. One such X factor that has amazed the entire humanity is the fear of Ghosts, Supernatural & Evil Spirits. A silent war is raging between the so called rationalists & the tradionalists all over the world. The rationalists call themselves people with scientific temperament and guage each and every happening with scientific reasoning, which is fully justifiable way to do. But simply denying the other person to vent his feelings over matter is not justifiable either.
I am vividly reminded about some incidents which i experienced some years ago in my life. I myself think that i am an educated ‘rationalist’ and do not buy the other view so easily, but still, i am unable to relate the two incidents that happened with me. Let me tell what those were.
It was one such cool winter night and i was alone in my house, it was around 3 am in the night that i suddenly woke up and i heard like someone was fiddling with a matchbox in the kitchen. I went into the kitchen to verify, may be the rationalist in me had woken up too.. but there was nothing objectionable there, so i drank water and as i turned, i heard the same noise in my living room, i rushed back to the living room to find out what was going on. Ditto, nothing there, after few pauses, the same sound in my kitchen and again in my living room. It was something as if some small kid was up to pranks with me. I left it and decided to ignore and just went to bed, a few minutes later all of a sudden my landline phone switched on and went in handsfree mode. Mind you, it requires to press atleast two buttons to do so, and the loud noise of it then evaporated the rationalist in me and i started feeling the fear factor. Not that i was alone for the first time in the house, i have been there many times before and after, but till date i did not know what had happened that night. Not even the rationalists in me or others could tell me till date.
The second incident was even more scarry. Those were summer days and it was about 3.30 – 4.00 am in the morning, all of a sudden my left shoulder started paining, when i opened my eyes, i saw a huge angry black man keeping his foot on my shoulder, i was yelling like anything, my wife and my mom came rushing, it was not that i was asleep or was dreaming, i was fully awakened. I told them to help, but they could not see the man, only he was visible to me, as my wife rushed near me, the man vanished and i was able to move my hand. My mom gave me holy water to drink and i slept after that. The next morning i could not lift my shoulder or move the hand, and i had to go to doctor to get injected some pain killers. That night the rationalist in me was nowhere to be seen.
Those two incidents and debates with my friends and colleagues left me to believe that yes there is an energy, may be in any form, that is present. Only that we are unable to fathom that. Our Science even at this stage is not fully developed and may be we have not been able to find these energy sources or those effects. My this thoughts finds strong footing in the fact that if we believe in positive energy, if we believe in god, we must believe in negative energy, we must believe in ghosts, supernaturals or evil spirits whatever you name it.
The other factor is that Newton’s law of energy, which says “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form to another.” What happens then when a person dies ? Where does the Energy goes? Is it transformed into positive or negative energy? based on the deeds of the person??? I am flummoxed & confused.
Yes, people have developed stories of ghosts, supernaturals & evil spirits mostly for their personal gain, for money for greed for other gratifications. I come from Konkan where these things are more personified. There are temples of King of Ghost, named Vetoba or Vetal. Perhaps the awe of the unknown inspires the poor villagers.
Some people make their living selling these stories and cure over them. It is not so that only in India this phenomenon is taking place, the westerners who claim themselves to be educated and rational people have faith healers, ghost hunters & what not. They have set up their businesses in more professional manner, they own their websites too.
On one such inquisitive trip to Konkan, I asked one such healer who claimed to have mystic power to rid ghosts, i asked him whether he himself had seen a ghost, and his technique of healing. Sounding the teasing tone of my question he answered, and his answer had a deep impact on me. He explained the rational behind it. He said, if you are scared, even just a bit, and suddenly if something unexplained happens your mind thinks that it was ghost, it was an evil spirit and the person keeps on withering from inside that he is possessed, the fear in him keeps on killing him. The awe of the unexplained, the fear of it , the impact of it, is so much that it requires an equal amount of dramatics to remove the fear. The healer went on to say, that if i just say to the man ‘possessed’ that it was nothing like ghosts or evil spirit he would never believe. So he performs, the pooja, uses dark shades, huge colors, dances himself like a possessed one and creates a scene where he tries to show that the evil spirit would now be driven out from the possessed one. The magic works and the person ‘possessed’ feels that he is healed.
I tried to explain two sides, i am sure my entire writing would leave my impression as of a confused person. Yes i am confused on this issue and am not able to know whether there are evil spirits. But how come the world comes only with positive & good energy without the trace of negative or bad energy ? Can anyone explain me this. ?
